…A treaty concluded in June 1494 between the Catholic Kings of Spain and King John II of Portugal, which determined the jurisdiction of both countries in the Atlantic Ocean. John II claimed that the lands discovered by Columbus belonged to his country based on the Treaty of Alcáçovas of 1479, so the Catholic Kings sent envoys to Pope Alexander VI, requesting the issuance of a papal bull stating that the lands discovered by Columbus belonged to their country. On May 4, 1493, the Pope issued the Papal Bull Inter Quetera.
