It is a type of seaweed belonging to the family Ulva of the order Ulvales, and there are many species, including Green Aonori, Flat Aonori, Bow Aonori, Usubayaonori, and Hosoeda Aonori. The algae are long and slender. In principle, the cells are arranged in a hollow tube to form the algae, but in some species, parts of the algae are flattened to form two cell layers like Ulva, and in other species, the tubes are cut open to form a single cell layer like Hitoegusa. Some grow on rocks near the high tide line, while others grow on rocks covered by ocean waves. Hosoeda Aonori and others grow in freshwater. Those that grow to 10 cm or more in length are edible. Usubayaonori is often disliked as a weed when cultivating Asakusa nori, as it grows on the cracks of seaweed, but if it grows alone, it can be scrubbed and eaten.

緑藻類アオサ目アオサ科に属する海藻で，スジアオノリ，ヒラアオノリ，ボウアオノリ，ウスバアオノリ，ホソエダアオノリなどいろいろな種がある。藻体は細長い。原則的に細胞が中空の管状に並んで藻体を構成しているが，種によって藻体の一部が平らになってアオサのように2層の細胞層となり，また種によっては管が切り開かれたようになってヒトエグサのように1層の細胞層となる。高潮線に近い岩石上に生育するもの，外洋の波をかぶる岩上に生育するものなどがある。ホソエダアオノリなどは淡水にも生育する。長さ 10cm以上になるものは食用にできる。ウスバアオノリはしばしばアサクサノリの養殖の際，雑藻として海苔ひびの上に生じるので嫌われるが，単独に生える場合は，これをすいて食用にする。
