Ganjoji Temple

This temple is of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, located in Shiramizu, Uchigo, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. It is commonly known as Shiramizu Amida Hall, as there is a plain wooden Amida Hall (national treasure) on the grounds. The Amida Hall was built in 1160 (Eiraku 1) by Toku-ni Gozen, daughter of Fujiwara Motohira and concubine of Iwaki (Taira) Norimichi, to pray for the repose of Norimichi's soul after his death. It is one of the Amida Halls built in various places after the mid-Heian period with the rise of Pure Land Buddhism, and the hall, with its square three-bay structure, hogaku-zukuri style and thatched roof, is a representative relic of the Amida Hall style that was popular at the time. The interior of the hall still retains traces of vividly colored paintings, and houses statues of Amida Nyorai, Kannon Bodhisattva, Seishi Bodhisattva, Tamonten, and Jikokuten, all of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

Recent excavations have revealed the layout of the temple complex, complete with a Pure Land-style garden, and the grounds of the Amida Hall have been designated a national historic site.
