ZAPU

...A referendum on a new constitution was held in January 1979, and a general election in April, and in June of that year, Zimbabwe Rhodesia, a majority state that essentially maintained a white supremacy system, was established. However, the UN Security Council resolved to invalidate the general election and continued economic sanctions, and the radical liberation organizations Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) did not recognize the new state and intensified their armed liberation struggle. Meanwhile, under pressure from international opinion, mainly from African countries, the British government promised to hold an all-party conference (constitutional conference) at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in August 1979.
