Saisei Gakusha - Saisei Gakusha

Japanese:
Saisei Gakusha - Saisei Gakusha

A representative private medical school of the Meiji era. It was founded in 1876 (Meiji 9) in Hongo Motomachi, Tokyo, by Hasegawa Tai, former principal of Tokyo Medical School. Along with Keio Gijuku Medical School, which was established in 1873, it was one of the earliest private medical schools in Japan to adopt modern Western medicine. Modeled on the German university system, it had an open enrollment system that did not restrict enrollment dates or qualifications, and over the 28 years leading up to its closure, it is said that over 21,000 students enrolled and 9,628 passed the medical license exam. In 1982, it moved to a new building in Hongo Yushima 4-chome, and the following year it established an affiliated hospital, calling it the Tokyo Medical College Saisei Gakusha. When the College Ordinance was promulgated in 1903 (Meiji 36), the Ministry of Education cited a lack of basic funding, and Hasegawa said it was pressure from the Ministry of Education, but the school was closed because it was "not allowed to be called a private medical college."
