...Biography unknown. After initially writing a translation of Ovid and the story of King Mark and Iseult, he wrote the long novel "Elect and Enid" around 1165, creating his own world. This is the story of a knight who is madly in love with his wife and finds his identity after an adventure. His next work, "Cliges" (around 1176), is a kind of "anti-Tristan" story about a queen who falls in love with her husband's nephew and maintains her true love until a happy ending. It stands in opposition to the theme of illicit love pursued by the troubadours of southern France.
