Shimazu Iehisa

Shimazu Iehisa

A military commander from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period. Born on November 7, 4th year of Tensho. His father was Shimazu Yoshihiro. His childhood name was Yonegikumaru, his first name was Tadatsune, and he was commonly known as Matachiro. In 1606 (Keicho 11), he was given the character "ie" (family) by the former shogun Ieyasu and became Iehisa. After his elder brother Hisayasu died during the Bunroku Invasion, he was chosen as the heir to the family, and he traveled the sea and achieved military success. In 1599, he inherited the family headship from Yoshihisa, killed Ijuin Tadamune at Fushimi, put down the Shonai Rebellion led by Ijuin Tadazane and others, defended his father Yoshihiro who had sided with the Western Army in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, was granted his territory by Ieyasu in 1602, built Kagoshima Castle in Kagoshima as his main castle, and successfully established the Shimazu Domain (Kagoshima Domain). In 1609, he subjugated the Ryukyus, and in 1624 (Kan'ei 1), he moved his wife and children to Edo. He died on February 23, 1624 (Kan'ei 1). His grave is in the Fukushoji Cemetery in Kagoshima City.

安土(あづち)桃山時代~江戸初期の武将。天正(てんしょう)4年11月7日生まれ。父は島津義弘(よしひろ)。幼名を米菊丸(よねぎくまる)、初名を忠恒(ただつね)、通称を又八郎(またはちろう)という。1606年(慶長11)前将軍家康より「家」の字を得て家久となる。文禄(ぶんろく)の役で兄久保(ひさやす)が没し家督継承者と決まり、渡海、軍功があった。1599年義久より家督を相続し、伏見(ふしみ)で伊集院忠棟(いじゅういんただむね)を討ち、伊集院忠真(ただざね)らの庄内(しょうない)の乱を鎮圧し、1600年関ヶ原の戦いで西軍方となった父義弘の弁護に努め、1602年家康から領国を安堵(あんど)され、鹿児島に鹿児島城を築き本城とし、島津藩(鹿児島藩)の創業に成功した。1609年琉球(りゅうきゅう)を従え、1624年(寛永1)には自ら藩主妻子を江戸居住とした。寛永(かんえい)15年2月23日没。墓は鹿児島市の福昌寺(ふくしょうじ)墓地にある。
