Darul Islam

The anti-government armed struggle and organization that took place in Indonesia from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s. The goal was to establish an Islamic state. The Renville Agreement signed with the Netherlands in January 1948 divided the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. The Pasundan Sultanate was to be established in Western Java, but Islamic extremists in Western Java resisted this and formed the Darul Islam (meaning "Land of Islam") under the leadership of Kartoswiruyo in the same year.
