Muskrat - Maskuratto (English spelling) Musk rat

A member of the mammalian class, rodent order, family Cricetidae. Widely distributed in North America. Inhabits waterside areas such as marshes, lakes, and rivers, and feeds mainly on aquatic plants, but also eats shellfish, frogs, and fish. It builds its nest on the shoreline, with its entrance underwater. Head and body length is 25-36 cm, tail length is 20-28 cm, and weight is 1-1.8 kg. Its tail is long and flat, and it has a pair of glands at the base of its tail that give off a musky odor, hence its name, the stinky mouse. The toes on its hind feet have stiff hairs that act as webs. Gestation period is 22-30 days. It gives birth from April to August, and in warm regions, it also gives birth in winter, with 1-11 pups per birth. It has 3 pairs of nipples. It was introduced to Europe and other places as a fur animal and kept as a pet, but it has also become widely feral in various places. In Japan, they were kept as pets during World War II, but some escaped and became wild in the Kanto region. The former Soviet Union was the largest producer of fur.
