Key groove - Key groove

...a machine element used to fasten a part that rotates with the shaft, such as a gear or belt pulley, to a shaft with a circular cross section. It is a type of wedge that is inserted between the two, and a groove (keyway) is provided in both the shaft and the shaft hole, or only in the shaft hole, into which the key is inserted (Figure). The most commonly used is the square sunken key that is inserted across the groove in the shaft and the shaft hole. There are two types of keys: a set key, in which the key is inserted into the keyway of the shaft beforehand and then the shaft hole is pushed in, and a drive key, in which the shaft hole is inserted into the shaft and then the key is driven in.
