The name is said to come from the Shingon sect Ichijo-in Temple, which is said to have been founded by the Baekje monk Nira, which built three temple buildings, called Kamibo, Chubo, and Shimobo. It has many connections with overseas countries and is also called Kara no Minato. One of the routes used by Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty was the Nanto route, which sailed south along the Kyushu coast, passing through Tanegashima, Yaku, Tokara, Amami, and Okinawa, before reaching the Yangtze River coast. Bonotsu is not recorded in the records, but it is thought to have been used as well, given its location at the southernmost tip of Kyushu and its suitable topography for anchorage.

　名称は，百済の僧日羅が創建したと伝える真言宗一乗院が三所に坊舎を建て，上坊，中坊，下坊と呼んでいたことによるという。海外とのつながりが多く，〈唐湊（からのみなと）〉とも呼ばれる。遣唐使船の航路に，九州沿岸を南下し種子，屋久，吐噶喇（とから），奄美，沖縄と島伝いに航行し，揚子江沿岸へ行く南島路があり，記録上は坊津は登場しないが，九州最南端に位置し，停泊に適した地勢からみて，坊津も利用されたと考えられてきた。…
