Kamenny Theatre

…Russian ballet company. Its official name was the Kirov Leningrad State Opera and Ballet Theatre (commonly known as the Kirov Theatre). In 1991, it reverted to its former name, the Mariinsky Theatre. The theatre's history began in 1783 with the Bolshoi (Kamenny) Theatre in St. Petersburg, but the origins of the ballet company date back even further, to 1742, when graduates of the choreographic school, which opened in 1738, performed in a court dance drama. About foreign instructors: Russian dancers who had mastered the art of Western classical dance had grown to the point where they could perform works incorporating their own country's folk dances by the beginning of the 19th century, but their attitude of learning from developed countries remained unchanged, and instructors and dancers continued to be invited from abroad until the end of the 19th century. …
