Russian (Soviet) composer and pianist. Born into a wealthy family in southeastern Ukraine, he showed signs of being a child prodigy from an early age. From 1904 to 1914, he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and others at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he became friends with his lifelong friend Myaskovsky. He made a remarkable achievement as a pioneer of modernism while still a student, and his works caused controversy. He met Diaghilev on a trip to London in 1914, and composed "Alla et Lorie" (1914-1915) and "Pagliacci" (1915, revised in 1920) for the Ballets Russes. The former was not performed as a ballet, but became an orchestral piece called "Scythian Suite". After the October Revolution in 1918, with the permission of the Soviet government, he lived in the United States until 1922, and then based in Paris, during which time he completed the operas "The Love for Three Oranges" (1919), "The Fiery Angel" (1919-1927, premiered in 1954), "Piano Concerto No. 3" (1921), and "Symphony No. 3" (1928). In 1936, he returned to the Soviet Union with his family. Like his younger colleague Shostakovich, he lived a difficult life under the Soviet government's policy of artistic control, but he continued to write works that showed even greater maturity, while retaining his natural singing spirit and talent. Other major works include the Classical Symphony (Symphony No. 1) (1917), two violin concertos (1917, 1935), ballet music Romeo (Romeo) and Juliet (1936), Cinderella (1944), Piano Sonata No. 7 (1942), musical fairy tale Peter and the Wolf (1936), and the cantata Alexander Nevsky (1939), written for Eisenstein's film (1938). When he traveled to the United States in 1918, he also gave piano recitals in Japan (Tokyo and Yokohama). → Oistrakh / Szigeti / Rostropovich → Related topics Film music | Oborin | Kabarevsky | Balanchine | Time signature | Richter Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
