1676‐1726 Austrian comedian. He created Hans Wurst, the representative clown in the German-speaking world. After traveling around southern Germany, he moved to Vienna around 1706 and became very popular. This role was a parody of the grandiose plots of the "state dramas" of the time. As this comic type became established and his successors further developed it, Stranicki was called the father of Vienna's folk drama. In 1709, he also built Vienna's first permanent theater and showed his skills as its manager. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
