…〈シャリバリ〉というフランス語の語源は明らかでないが，共同体の伝統的規範を侵犯した者に対し，儀礼化したやり方で罰を加える行為であって，中世から19世紀に至るまで，広くヨーロッパ各地に見られた。英語では〈ラフ･ミュージックrough music〉，ドイツ語では〈カッツェンムジークKatzenmusik〉，イタリア語では〈スカンパナーテscampanate〉などと呼ばれている。シャリバリの対象として最も多く見られるのは，再婚をめぐっての事例であり，男やもめと若い娘とか，若者と年齢がかけ離れた寡婦といった組合せで，しかも一方がよそ者の場合など，あつらえむきのシャリバリの対象であった。…
