Since France leased the port of Obock on the north shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura in 1859 when construction of the Suez Canal began, it gradually expanded its influence to the surrounding areas, and in 1896 officially colonized its sphere of influence as the French Somali Coast, Côte française des Somalis. Around 1888, France also opened a new port city, Djibouti, on the south shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura and established the capital of its colony, shifting its attention to new ports.
