The spirit of the Ganges River was deified and made into a goddess. Hindu river worship created many holy places in the Ganges basin, including Benares (Varanasi). It was believed that those who bathed in the holy river and scattered their ashes and bones there after death would ascend to heaven, and many myths and legends have been passed down. In the Ramayana, King Bhagiratha undertook severe penances to appease the spirits of his ancestors, and Shiva, pleased with this, brought the river of the gods, which flowed in the heavens, down to earth by dropping it into his pigtail, and it then flowed into the sea. In addition, since it originates in the Himalayas, this goddess is also called the eldest daughter of the snowy mountains.
