The Amorite dynasty (c. 1900-1600 BC) with its capital in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Babylon. This period is called the Old Babylonian period. The first king, Sum-Abum, used the city of Babylon, located west of Kish, as his base and steadily seized territory. The sixth king, Hammurabi, expanded the kingdom he inherited from his father, Sin-Muballit, and conquered the two dynasties of Isin and Larsa one after another, becoming the ruler of all of Babylonia. After conquering Eshnunna and Mari, he attacked Assyria, and by around the 40th year of his reign, he had captured Ashur and Nineveh. From the time of his successor, Samsirna, the Amorite and Kassite invasions began to plague the region, and the last king, Samsuditana, was defeated by the Hittites and Hurrians who invaded from the Taurus Mountains, bringing the dynasty to an end around 1600 BC.
