...Depending on the intensity of the lighting, the gauze screen allows the viewer to see, disappear, or become vague. American stage designer Jo Mielziner (1901-76) used a transparent gauze screen to create the stage for T. Williams's The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire, among others, and created a poetic atmosphere. The works of German playwright and director B. Brecht are generally called "epic theatre," but he also created his own unique style of stage expression.
