Battle of Kawanakajima

Japanese: 川中島合戦 - かわなかじまのかっせん

Storytelling. Also known by titles such as "Kawanakajima Gunkouki," "Koetsu Gunki," and "Homore no Kuruma-gakeri." A representative work of military tales. The subject is the famous battle at Kawanakajima in Shinshu between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. In the storytelling of Momokawa Joen (Enrin) from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, there were five major battles and 122 minor skirmishes. The mysterious figure Yamamoto Kansuke plays an active role, and the battle scenes are characterized by their scenes of chaos, as he reads out loud the flags, signboards, and horse banners of the armies. It is said that Ito Enshin performed this battle chronicle in front of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari, in 1806 (Bunka 3).

講談。《川中島軍功記》《甲越軍記》《誉れの車掛り》などの題名もある。軍談物の代表的作品。武田信玄，上杉謙信の有名な信州川中島の対決が題材。幕末～明治期の桃川如燕(燕林)の講談では大戦5度，小ぜり合い122度という。謎の人物山本勘介が活躍し，合戦の場面において軍勢の旗，指物，馬印をとうとうと読みあげる修羅場に特色がある。この合戦記を1806年(文化3)に伊東燕晋は11代将軍徳川家斉の御前で演じたといわれる。
