The center of a circle (circumscribing circle) that passes through the three vertices of a triangle is called the circumcenter of the triangle. The circumcenter is the intersection of the perpendicular bisectors of the three sides, and is a point equidistant from the three vertices. The circumcenter of an acute triangle is inside the triangle ( figure (1)), and the circumcenter of a right triangle is the midpoint of the hypotenuse ( figure (2)). The circumcenter of an obtuse triangle is outside the triangle ( figure (3)). The circumcenter of a triangle coincides with the orthocenter of the triangle formed by the midpoints of the three sides.

In the case of a tetrahedron, the center of a sphere (circumscribing sphere) that passes through the four vertices of the tetrahedron is called the circumcenter. The circumcenter of a tetrahedron is the shared point of the perpendicular bisectors of the six edges, and is equidistant from the four vertices.

三角形の三つの頂点を通る円（外接円）の中心を三角形の外心という。外心は三つの辺の垂直二等分線の交点で、三つの頂点から等距離にある点である。鋭角三角形の外心は三角形の内部にあり（図の(1)）、直角三角形の外心は斜辺の中点である（図の(2)）。鈍角三角形の外心は三角形の外部にある（図の(3)）。三角形の外心は、3辺の中点でできる三角形の垂心と一致する。

　四面体の場合は、四面体の四つの頂点を通る球（外接球）の中心を外心という。四面体の外心は六つの辺の垂直二等分面の共有点で、四つの頂点から等距離にある点である。
