In the embryo of a multicellular organism, this refers to a group of cells that are determined to become the material for a future organ or tissue. However, in amphibian embryos, even if they are not determined, cell groups that are identified as becoming some organ or tissue after normal morphogenetic movements are also treated as primordia. Moreover, a diagram showing the arrangement of primordia in such an undifferentiated embryo is called a primordium diagram or a predestined fate diagram.
