Kazurabashi Bridge - Kazurabashi Bridge

Japanese: かずら橋 - かずらばし

Located in Zentoku, Miyoshi City, in the west of Tokushima Prefecture, this suspension bridge is made of vines. It is built over the steep cliffs of the Iya Valley and is replaced every three years. It is 45m long and 1.5m wide. It is made of woven vines from the wild Sarunashi (monkey pear) tree, which grows in the mountains, and its ends are tied to trees on both banks. It is one of the most primitive forms of bridge, and is now only found in remote areas such as Tibet and India. In Japan, they were scattered in mountainous areas until the early Meiji period, but disappeared with the spread of steel cables. It was designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1955.

徳島県西部，三好市の善徳にある，かずらでつくられた吊橋。祖谷渓の険阻な絶壁にかけられており，3年ごとにかけ替えられる。長さ 45m，幅 1.5m。山地に野生するサルナシ (猿梨)のつるを編んでつくられ，端は両岸の樹木につなぎ止めてある。橋の最も原始的な一形態で，現在ではチベットやインドなどの僻地にみられるだけである。日本でも明治初期までは山地に散見されたが，鋼索使用の普及とともに姿を消した。 1955年国の重要有形民俗文化財に指定された。
