Asakura Settsu

[Died] March 27, 2014. Set designer and painter in Inagi, Tokyo. Real name: Tomizawa Setsu. A pioneer among female set designers. The eldest daughter of sculptor Asakura Fumio. Following her father's policy, she did not receive any formal education after graduating from elementary school, but instead grew up receiving talent training at home. She studied Japanese painting under Ito Shinsui, and in 1953 won the Uemura Shōen Award. She eventually switched to Western painting, but began working on stage design in the 1960s. In 1970, she moved to the United States and studied stage design in New York. She was active in a wide range of fields, including kabuki, avant-garde theater, opera, dance, and film, and was known for her bold and fresh stage designs. She worked on many productions, including the Super Kabuki production Yamato Takeru and Yume no Yuminsha's Nokemono Kitarite. In 1980, he won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Art Direction for Masahiro Shinoda's "Yasha-ike", in 1985 he won the Arts Festival Award for "Nigori-e" directed by Yukio Ninagawa, in 1989 he won the Asahi Prize, in 1991 he won the Kinokuniya Theater Award for "The Secret of the Rose Bouquet" and in 1995 he won the Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Staff for "Don't Cry". In 1987 he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon and in 2006 he was named a Person of Cultural Merit.

舞台美術家，画家。本名冨沢摂。女性舞台美術家の草分け的存在。彫刻家朝倉文夫の長女。父の方針で，小学校卒業後は学校教育を受けず，家庭で才能教育を受けて育った。伊東深水に師事し日本画を学び，1953年に上村松園賞を受賞。やがて洋画に転じたが，1960年代から舞台美術を手がける。1970年に渡米し，ニューヨークで舞台美術を学ぶ。歌舞伎，前衛演劇，オペラ，舞踊，映画など幅広い分野で活躍し，大胆かつ新鮮な舞台づくりで知られた。スーパー歌舞伎『ヤマトタケル』や夢の遊眠社『野獣降臨（のけものきたりて）』など多くの作品を手がけた。1980年篠田正浩監督の『夜叉ケ池』で日本アカデミー賞美術賞，1985年蜷川幸雄演出の『にごり江』で芸術祭賞，1989年朝日賞，1991年『薔薇の花束の秘密』などで紀伊国屋演劇賞，1995年『泣かないで』などで読売演劇大賞最優秀スタッフ賞などを受賞。1987年紫綬褒章を受章，2006年文化功労者に選ばれた。
