An ion of an organic compound that has a positive charge on the carbon atom. It is the opposite of carbanion, and is a general term for carbonium ions and carbenium ions. A carbocation with a charged carbon atom with a coordination number of 4 or 5 is defined as a carbonium ion, and a carbocation with a charged carbon atom with a coordination number of 3 is defined as a carbenium ion. This definition was proposed by American G. Olah in 1972, and is now often followed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
