Askol'd i Dir (English spelling)

Japanese: アスコリドとジール（英語表記）Askol’d i Dir

Prince of Kiev, Russia, before the Rurikid dynasty. According to the chronicles, both were nobles under Rurik, and left Novgorod with permission to go to Byzantium, where they met the descendants of the brothers Ki, Shchek, and Khorif in Kiev, and liberated their Polyanin (Slavic) clan from Khazar rule. The details of their relationship with Rurik are unclear, but they may have been of Norman or Baltic Slav origin. According to Byzantine sources, the two led a large Russian army to attack Constantinople in 866.
