A gambling machine that uses coins or their substitutes. Although there are some differences depending on the type of machine, when you pull the lever, several different patterns appear in three or four small windows, and if two or more of the same patterns appear in a row, the machine returns several times the amount of the coin inserted. They are installed in most casinos (official gambling halls) around the world, including Las Vegas and Monaco in the United States. They are said to have been invented by Charles Fey (1862-1944) in San Francisco in 1895, and were later improved to the current model around 1906, which became very popular in Chicago and the California area. They were also placed in bars and later spread throughout the United States. An automatic version called Consol was made around 1930, but it soon fell out of use. They were brought to Japan by the US military just after World War II, but were overshadowed by pachinko and did not become popular. After that, pachislots appeared in pachinko parlors, and they became a standard entertainment device installed in game centers and other places. In addition, general vending machines are sometimes called slot machines.
