…Breton published the Second Surrealist Manifesto in 1929, in which he reaffirmed his agreement with historical materialism, but also harshly criticized the Communist Party and advocated the Surrealist movement's independence and secrecy. He took this opportunity to expel influential members such as Desnos and Artaud, and to add Dali, Bunuel, and Charre to the group, launching the second journal, Surrealism in the Service of the Revolution. The movement had already gained many sympathizers around the world and was expanding internationally, but after Aragon withdrew in 1932, the movement was forced to work increasingly in difficult conditions under the threat of the Nazis. …
