… Many of the designs in these lavishly bound books, including images of Jesus Christ, were found in the Bible, but they were destroyed by opponents of iconoclasm during the Reformation, and few of them remain in their original form to this day. The Gospels of Lindau are considered to be the most representative of these works. The back cover is said to have been made in the 8th century, and the front cover in the 9th century, both of which were made in southern Germany. They depict holy images made of gold, silver, and jewels, and are astonishingly lavish. …
