In addition, small coastal fishing villages mainly use small-scale set nets for sand eels, bait sardines, horse mackerel, and mackerel, as well as for seaweed and oyster farming in the inland bay, and for seaweed fishing on the open ocean side. Black slate is a local specialty, and is quarried in the northern part of the peninsula. Inai slate is used for stone monuments, Onagawa slate for stone slabs and roofing materials, and Ogatsu slate from Ogatsu Town north of Onagawa is famous for being used to make inkstones.
