Aster (English spelling) Aster chinensis; aster

Japanese: アスター(英語表記)Aster chinensis; aster
Aster (English spelling) Aster chinensis; aster
An annual plant of the Asteraceae family. Native to northeastern China, it is planted in flower beds for decorative purposes or used as cut flowers. It is known by many names, including Ezogiku (Ezo chrysanthemum), Edogiku (Edo chrysanthemum), and Chosengiku (Korean chrysanthemum). It grows to a height of 30-60 cm and is covered with sparse coarse hairs. The leaves are ovate with irregular sawtooth. From summer to autumn, it produces large flower heads in pale pink, purple, bluish purple, and white. Numerous ray florets are arranged around the edge, and a yellow tubular flower is in the center. The involucre is green and multi-rowed, and somewhat leaf-like, enveloping the flower head. In the past, it was often used as a Buddhist flower, but recently it has become popular as a high-quality cut flower, and Nagano Prefecture is a famous production area. Aster is the genus name for the Aster family, which includes this species, but in the horticultural world, it is often used to refer to this species alone.
