Kanada Castle

A 7th century Korean-style mountain castle built overlooking Aso Bay in the center of Tsushima. The site is located in Kurosejoyama, Mitsushima-cho, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is a nationally designated special historic site. It is also called "Kanetanoki." It was built in 667 along with Takayasu Castle in Yamato Province and Yashima Castle in Sanuki Province as part of the defense against Tang and Silla after the defeat in the Battle of Baekgang (Nihon Shoki), and was on the front line against the Korean Peninsula. There is a stone rampart on the summit at an altitude of 275m, and stone walls surround the entire mountain. The total length of the castle walls is estimated to be 5.4km, including the remaining 2.8km. The southeastern foot of the mountain has a gentle slope, and the three valleys are closed off with stone walls, with castle gates and water gates, and the place names Ichinokido, Ninokido, Sannokido and Kuranouchi remain. The castle walls are about 4.5 to 7m high. When two charcoal materials excavated from the double earthworks in 1998 were measured using the carbon isotope method, one was dated to between 540 and 630, and the other to between 590 and 650, suggesting that there was a need for the construction of such earthworks (perhaps due to political or military tensions) even before the Battle of Baekgang. →Ono Castle/Kihi Castle→Related article Takayasu Castle

対馬(つしま)の中央部にある浅茅(あそう)湾に臨んで造築された７世紀の朝鮮式山城(さんじょう)。跡地は長崎県対馬市美津島町黒瀬城山(じょうやま)にあり，国指定特別史跡。〈かねたのき〉ともいう。白村江(はくそんこう)の戦に敗れたあと，唐・新羅(しらぎ)に対する防衛の一環として667年に倭(やまと)国高安(たかやす)城・讃吉(さぬき)国屋島(やしま)城とともに築かれたもので（《日本書紀》），対朝鮮半島の最前線にあった。標高275mの山頂部に石塁があり，全山を取り巻くように石垣が巡らされ，城壁の総延長は残存の2.8kmを含めて5.4kmと想定される。南東麓はやや緩やかな斜面で，三つの谷は石垣で閉鎖され，城門・水門が設けられており，一ノ木戸・二ノ木戸・三ノ木戸・蔵の内などの地名としても残っている。城壁の高さは約4.5〜７mに及ぶ。1998年二重の土塁から出土した二つの炭化物を炭素同位体法により測定すると，１つは540年から630年，もう１つは590年から650年という結果が出て，白村江の戦以前からこうした土塁を築造する必要（政治・軍事的緊張か）があったことが想定される。→大野城／基肄城
