Although excavated examples of bronze mirrors in China date back to before the Warring States period, the character for "mirror" only appeared in documents during the Warring States period.

…In 1862, he took the three daughters of Dr. Liddell, the headmaster, on a picnic, and during the picnic he improvised a story with Alice, the second daughter, as the main character, which became the prototype of “Alice in Wonderland” (1865). By the time the companion work “Through the Looking-Glass” (1871) was published, his relationship with the Liddell family had already deteriorated, and he rarely saw Alice. Another masterpiece, “The Hunting of the Snark” (1876), is dedicated to his new girl friends. …
