Humphrey, Hubert Horatio
Born May 27, 1911 in Wallace, South Dakota
[Died] January 13, 1978. Waverly, Minnesota. American politician. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1939, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Louisiana. He taught political science at the same university, and in 1942 was head of the Minnesota War Service Program and a radio news commentator. In 1944, he served as F. Roosevelt's Minnesota campaign manager. He became mayor of Minneapolis in 1945, a senator in 1948, and vice-leader of the Senate Democratic Party in 1961, and was instrumental in the passage of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (1963) and the Civil Rights Act (1964). He served as vice-president in the Johnson administration from 1965 to 1968, and was seen as a standard-bearer for the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, but his support for the president's Vietnam policy led to his shadow as a liberal, and he ended up losing the 1968 presidential election to Republican Richard Nixon. He later became an executive of Encyclopedia Britannica and participated in the company's educational activities. He returned to the Senate in 1970 and promoted various progressive legislation. In 1972, he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, but was defeated by G. McGovern. Before his death from cancer, the Senate created the unprecedented position of Vice President of the Senate to reward him for his service.
