A whisper

Japanese:
A whisper

A Muromachi-period treatise on Renga (linked verse). 1 or 2 volumes. Written by Shinkei. Based on what Shinkei wrote in 1463 (Kansho 4) when he went down to his hometown, Taisho in Kii Province (now part of Wakayama City), at the request of the local people, it has been expanded and revised several times since then. It is composed of a dialogue style and focuses on how to study Renga, the style of writing, and the use of tsukeai (attachment), but it also contains many comments on waka and Buddhism, and overall has the feel of a comprehensive discussion of art. In particular, it is evaluated that the point that thoroughly observing the impermanence and sorrow of life leads to inner fulfillment and that creative activities at such a state are ideal is unique, compared to many other treatises on Renga that are limited to technical discussions. Also noteworthy is its discussion of beauty, focusing on mystery and elegance.
