A comprehensive chemical company whose predecessor was Okinoyama Coal Mine, established in 1897 in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The company's goal was to mine undersea coalfields, but in 1942 it merged with Ube Nitrogen, Ube Cement, and Ube Iron Works, which were also affiliated with the company, to form the current company name and diversify its operations. After World War II, the company expanded into nylon raw materials and petrochemicals, becoming one of the leading comprehensive chemical companies. The coal mines in the Ube area were closed in 1967, and the anthracite mine was closed in 1970. In recent years, the company's mainstays are chemicals and resins, cement, machinery and metal molding, and energy and the environment. The head office is in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and the company has factories in Ube, Ichihara (Chiba), and others. The company's capital in 2011 was 58.4 billion yen, and its sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 616 billion yen.
