A modern byway that runs north from Shirakawa-juku, at the northern end of the Oshu road, to Hakodate. It is also commonly known as the Oshu Kaido, as it runs through the Oshu region, and its main route runs from Fukushima - Sendai - Morioka - Noheji - Aomori - Minmaya, before crossing the sea to Matsumae - Hakodate. There are various theories about the length and number of post stations. Since each feudal lord had direct control, there was no consistent post station system or assistant village system, and semi-independent policies were seen. Many of the post stations had underdeveloped resting functions, and the number of horses kept at the post stations was not consistent, with the staff often being transferred through training camps.
