Japanese: 怪談噺 - かいだんばなし

〘Noun〙 A story about monsters and ghosts. Also, especially, a human interest story that deals with ghost stories. The first Hayashiya Shozo is said to be the originator. The performance techniques include darkening the auditorium in the middle of the story, using musical instruments, and making a ghost in a white robe appear. San'yutei Encho's "Kaidan Botandōrō" and "Shinkei-ruike-fuchi" are particularly famous. ※Ninjōhon Eitaidango (1838) 2 "If ghost stories can be as emotional as they are now, even Hayashiya Shozo would not be able to fulfill them."

〘名〙化け物、幽霊などの話。また、特に、怪談を扱った人情噺。初代林家正蔵が祖とされる。話の途中で場内を暗くし、鳴り物を用い、白衣の幽霊を出すなどの演出法がある。三遊亭円朝作「怪談牡丹燈籠」「真景累ケ淵」などが特に名高い。※人情本・英対暖語（1838）二「怪談ばなしも、今のくらゐ情がうつりゃア、林屋正蔵もかなはせねへ」
