Gazania

A semi-cold-hardy perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae), it is treated as an annual in cold regions. There are 24 species of Gazania distributed in South Africa, and it is often cultivated under the name African daisy. The leaves grow in large numbers from the base of the plant, are lanceolate, but some are pinnate, and are dark green on the upper side and white on the lower side. From June to September, the chrysanthemum-shaped flowers, 7 to 8 cm in diameter, bloom one after another. The flowers are yellow, milky white, orange, bright red, etc., with dark brown spots in the center. The flowers close on cloudy days and at night. This species was developed by crossing with many other species, and the first hybrid was announced in recent years, making it the most popular variety. For use in flower beds, rock gardens, and potted plants. Plant 30 cm apart in a sunny, humus-rich area with good drainage. It is sensitive to the cold, so protect it from the cold in winter. For propagation by seed, plant in April or May at a temperature of 16°C for optimum germination. For division, divide into clumps of 2-3 buds in spring or autumn.

キク科（APG分類：キク科）の半耐寒性の宿根草で、寒地では一年草として扱う。ガザニアは南アフリカに24種分布し、アフリカンデージー（クンショウギク）の名で、よく栽培される。葉は根際から多数出て、披針(ひしん)形であるが羽状葉もあり、表面は濃緑色で裏面は白色。6～9月、径7～8センチメートルの菊状花を次々と開く。花色は黄、乳白、橙(だいだい)、鮮紅色などで、中心に黒褐色の斑(ふ)が入る。曇天や夜間は花は閉じる。本種は多くの種類との交雑によって作出されたもので、近年雑種第一代も発表され、もっとも人気のある品種である。花壇、ロック・ガーデン、鉢植え用とする。日当りがよく腐植質に富み、排水のよい所に株間30センチメートルに植える。寒さに弱いので冬期は防寒する。繁殖は実生(みしょう)では4～5月、発芽適温16℃にし、株分けでは春、秋に2～3芽ずつに分ける。
