It is abbreviated as the SOLAS Convention. It is an international treaty that stipulates standards for ship inspection, hull and engine structure, fire protection, waterproofing, emergency radio equipment, and the transportation of dangerous goods in order to maintain the seaworthiness of ships at sea and the safety of human life. The first treaty was concluded in 1914 as a direct result of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and five other treaties were subsequently established at international conferences by 1974. It was subsequently revised in 1988, and the current treaty was adopted in 2002 and has been in effect since January 1, 2004. → Related topics Life-saving equipment | Ship Safety Act Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
