…In 1615 (Genwa 1), Terusumi was granted 38,000 koku of rice in the Shiso Domain, and in 1606, he was granted an additional 25,000 koku of rice in the Sayo Domain, the former territory of his younger brother Teruoki. In response, he tried to increase his vassals, and appointed Osaka ronin Ogawa Shirouemon as his new chief retainer, recommended by his favorite retainer Suga Tomoyasu. The incident started with a financial tangle involving a certain head retainer of the flag magistrate Bessho Rokuzaemon, and the two factions of the old chief retainer Iki Iori and the head retainers (11 people) and the new chief retainer Ogawa, Suga and Bessho, led to a power struggle within the family, and more than 100 head retainers and their comrades fled the domain. The shogunate made a ruling in July 1640, ordering Iki and his son, who were considered ringleaders, and the head retainers and their sons who had fled the domain, to commit seppuku. Suga and his son were sentenced to death, and Ogawa was placed in the care of another family. …
