After the Opium Wars, the Arrow Incident triggered the invasion of China by the allied forces of Britain and France. It is also called the Arrow War or the Arrow Incident. On October 8, 1856 (the 6th year of Xianfeng), Chinese soldiers pulled down the British flag on the Arrow, a Hong Kong-registered, Chinese-owned ship (whose registration had actually expired) that was anchored on the Pearl River in front of Guangdong, and the crew was kidnapped on suspicion of piracy. At the time, negotiations to revise the treaty between China and Britain were not progressing, and British envoy to China and Governor of Hong Kong J. Bowing and Guangdong consul HS Parkes forcibly turned the Arrow incident into an "incident" to urge their home country to declare war, thus breaking off negotiations with Governor-General of Guangdong and China Ye Ming-chen (1807-59).
