...If we add noshi (paper wrapping) and tsutsumi (paper wrapping) to origami from the original meaning of the word origami, the era goes back quite a bit, but the oldest surviving document on recreational origami in the world is Senbazuru Orikata (Senbazuru Origata), first published in 1797 (Kansei 9) during the late Edo period. This is a book that shows 49 types of continuous forms of folded cranes, representative of origami, from 2 to 97 cranes, each of which is made from a single piece of paper, with development diagrams for folding and the completed form, accompanied by a kyoka poem. The preface states that origami cranes were already well known. Another known concrete document is two books titled Kayaragusa (Sessai Tokusa) among the 232 notebooks that Adachi Kazuyuki kept as his personal memorandum for several decades until 1845 (Koka 2). ...
