Gallābīya (English spelling)

Japanese: ガラービーヤ（英語表記）gallābīya

The correct name is galabiyya, a corrupted Egyptian dialect of the Arabic word jilbāb (clothing). Traditional Arab clothing is a loose-fitting long garment suited to the local climate and lifestyle, but it is distinguished by the shape of the collar, the type of fabric, the way it is cut, etc., and it is possible to identify the region, occupation, and social status of the person wearing it. However, galabiyya refers to the clothing worn by Egyptian peasants. One type is called baladi, which has a rounded neckline bordered with silk thread.

アラビア語のジルバーブjilbāb(衣服)がなまったエジプト方言で，正しくはガッラービーヤ。伝統的なアラブの服は，その土地の風土や生活様式にかなった，ゆったりとした長衣であるが，衿の形，布地の種類，裁断の仕方等によって区別され，それが着用される地域や職能や社会的地位を判別できるものとなっている。しかしガラービーヤといえば，エジプト農民のまとう服を指すことになる。一つはバラディーと呼ばれ，円くえぐった衿ぐりは絹糸で縁取りがしてある。
