Yoshimi Usui

Born June 17, 1905 in Mita, Nagano
[Died] July 12, 1987. Tokyo critic. After graduating from Matsumoto High School, he graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1929. He worked as a teacher at a junior high school and a normal school, but in 1940 he participated in the founding of Chikuma Shobo by Akira Furuta. He was drafted during World War II in 1943. From 1946, the year after Japan lost the war, to 1971 he edited the magazine Tenbo at Chikuma Shobo, while also writing literary criticism, demonstrating his versatile talents. He published a collection of essays entitled Sengo (12 volumes, 1965-66). He later turned his hand to novels, completing the epic novel Azumino (1964-1973), set in Nagano and Tokyo, depicting the vicissitudes of modern Japanese history. In 1977 he was in court over his novel Jikken no Tenmatsu (The Accident) (based on Yasunari Kawabata), but the case was settled. His work on the Emperor System, "Leo" (6 parts), is incomplete. He also wrote "Usui Yoshimi Shu" (5 volumes, 85). He is a member of the Japan Art Academy.

評論家。松本高等学校を経て，1929年東京大学国文学科を卒業。中学，師範学校教師をつとめたが，40年古田晁の筑摩書房の創業に参加した。第2次世界大戦中，43年に応召。敗戦の翌年 46年から 71年まで筑摩書房で雑誌『展望』を編集，かたわら文芸評論の筆をとり，多彩な活躍ぶりをみせた。評論集『戦後』 (12巻，1965～66) がある。その後，小説にも手を染め，長野と東京を舞台に日本の近代史の転変を描いた大河小説『安曇野 (あずみの) 』 (64～73) を完成した。 77年小説『事故のてんまつ』 (川端康成がモデル) で裁判となったが和解。天皇制をとらえた『獅子座』 (6部構成) は未完。『臼井吉見集』 (5巻，85) がある。芸術院会員。
