Atsumi ware

Japanese: 渥美焼 - あつみやき
Atsumi ware
Medieval pottery produced on the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture from the end of the Heian period through to the Kamakura period. Approximately 100 groups and nearly 500 ancient kiln sites are known, concentrated at the base of the peninsula and around Ashigaike Pond in the center. Products consist mainly of vases, mortars, mortars, and mountain tea bowls, but specialty items include pottery with a three-line pattern, such as kesadasukimon and lotus petal patterns. A sacred jar bearing the inscriptions of Mikawa provincial governor Fujiwara Akinaga and Tonokiyo was excavated from the Oarako kiln site. There are also the remains of Todaiji tile kilns in the Irago area. [Narazaki Shoichi]
