The inhabitants of the Mariana, Caroline, Marshall, and Gilbert Islands, north of the equator in the Pacific Ocean. They have brown skin, short stature, and curly or wavy hair, but their physical characteristics vary considerably from island to island. They generally combine fishing with the cultivation of root vegetables, breadfruit, bananas, and coconut palms, and, except in some areas, are matrilineal. They have advanced hierarchical differentiation, and although there are differences in the nature of power, they generally have chiefdoms. However, Micronesia is generally said to be less culturally uniform than Polynesia. For example, the pottery used in the west is unknown in the east, and instead they practice umu cuisine, the habit of chewing betel nut is only found in the west, and the drink kava, which is popular throughout Polynesia, is used on the islands of Ponape and Kosrae. As for languages, there are many different languages that exist in each region, and it is not possible to generalize them as Micronesian languages; some belong to the Indonesian language family, some to the Melanesian language family, and even among these, some are strongly influenced by Polynesian and Papuan languages.

太平洋の赤道以北，マリアナ，カロリン，マーシャル，ギルバートの各諸島の住民。褐色の肌と短身，縮毛ないし波状毛をもつが，形質的特徴は島ごとにかなり異なる。おおむね根菜類やパンの木，バナナ，ココやしなどの栽培と漁労を組合せて行なっていること，一部の地方を除けば母系制をとること，階層分化が進行し，権力の性格に相違はあるが，全般的に首長制が存在していたことなどの共通点をもつが，一般にミクロネシアはポリネシアほどの文化的一様性をもたないといわれる。たとえば，西部で使用していた土器を東部では知らず，代りにウム料理を行なっていたこと，ビンロウの実を噛む習慣は西部にのみみられること，またポナペ島，コスラエ島では，ポリネシア全般に好まれているカバという飲料を用いていることなどがあげられる。言語も地域ごとに存在するいくつもの言語をミクロネシア諸語として統括することはできず，インドネシア語派に属するもの，メラネシア語派に属するものなどがあり，またそのうちでもポリネシア語やパプア語の影響を強く受けているものもある。
