This epic work depicts the life of the Estonian mythical hero Kalevipoeku (King Kalev's son), full of adventures. It was influenced by national romanticism in the first half of the 19th century and was directly inspired by the appearance of the Finnish epic poem Kalevala. This epic work, spanning 20 chapters and about 19,000 lines, was compiled in poetic form by F.R. Faehlmann (1798-1850)'s friend F.R. Kreutzwald (1803-82), using the rhythm and parallelism of folk songs, based on prose material collected from all over Estonia by F.Faehlmann.

エストニア民族の神話的英雄カレビポエク(カレブ王の王子)を主人公に，彼の冒険談に彩られた生涯を描いた叙事詩的な作品。19世紀前半の民族的ロマン主義の影響をうけ，直接にはフィンランドの叙事詩《カレワラ》の出現に刺激されて世に送られた。20章約1万9000行に及ぶ大作は，フェールマンF.R.Faehlmann(1798‐1850)の手でエストニア各地から収集された散文の資料をもとに，友人のクロイツワルトF.R.Kreutzwald(1803‐82)が民謡の韻律や対句法を用いて詩の形式でまとめあげたものである。
