Ohara Houn

Japanese: 小原豊雲 - おはらほううん
Ohara Houn

He is the third head of the Ohara school of ikebana. The school grew under the succession of its founder Unshin and the second head Koun, but its foundations were firmly established when Houn became head in 1938 (Showa 13). He played a leading role in avant-garde ikebana after the Second World War, and his style is characterized by a wild and fantastical atmosphere. In 1958, he traveled to Europe as a cultural envoy for the Brussels World Exposition, and in 1965 he held a solo exhibition in Central and South America, and in 1966 he received the Alden Soberana de la Cruz Medal from Brazil. He was chairman of the Japan Ikebana Art Association from 1971 to 1989 (Heisei 1). In 1980, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure Third Class.
