Tatar Straits - Tatarskiy Proliv

Japanese: タタール海峡 - たたーるかいきょう(英語表記)Татарский Пролив/Tatarskiy Proliv
Tatar Straits - Tatarskiy Proliv

A strait between the eastern coast of Siberia in the Russian Federation and Karafuto (Sakhalin). It connects the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. It is 633 km long from north to south, 342 km wide in the south near the Sea of Japan, and 40 km wide in the north. The narrowest part is 7.3 km wide between Lazarev on the Siberian side and Pogibi on Sakhalin. In Japan, this part is called Mamiya Strait, but in the Russian Federation, it is called Nevelskoy Canal Пролив Невельского/Proliv Nevel'skogo after the Russian discoverer Nevelskoy. In 1808 (Bunka 5)-1809, Mamiya Rinzo, Matsuda Denjuro, and others surveyed the strait and discovered that Karafuto is not a peninsula but an island, hence the name Mamiya Strait. In the north, there is Amur Bay at the mouth of the Amur River. According to the Sailing Directions, the depth of the northern main channel is about 4 meters at low tide, barely enough for small boats to pass through. It freezes over from November to May, making it possible to navigate by sled.
